7 More Essential Free Android Apps for Songwriters

This is kind of a sequel to my earlier article on songwriting apps for Android users, which seems a little dated now. So here are the Android apps you should be looking at installing now, if you are a writer of worship songs.

The Bible - YouVersion
For Android, this is probably the best app for Bible passage lookup. You get access to most new translations for free and even store many of them locally for offline access. Keep checking the app regularly and you will come across limited period offers to download paid Bible versions also for free. The ‘search’, ‘bookmark’ and ‘sync’ features round off this app’s list of impressive features. Download link: http://goo.gl/dIOYB

Rhyming Dictionary - RhymasaurusRex
This is a simple app to have when searching for rhyming ideas. Simple input any word and tap 'submit' to get multiple words that rhyme. Here’s the download link: http://goo.gl/UB1vS

However, for imperfect rhymes, there's no better app than B-Rhymes, check it out if you haven’t got it already.

Word Ideas - Advanced English & Thesaurus
Ever thought “wish I had a better word to replace this!” in the middle of writing a song? Here’s where this app comes in. Advanced English & Thesaurus is a free dictionary and Thesaurus with access to over 1.4 million words. A word search generates synonyms, antonyms, similar and related words in addition to hypernyms (more generic words), hyponyms (subordinate words) and meronyms (part names).

Sometimes it also gives illustrations on how a word is used. All of these should help trigger lyric ideas or improve lines in the song by using substitute words suggested by this app. Download link: http://goo.gl/BJLQS

Writing & Recording - Evernote
This is an idea originally posted by David Santistevan in his blog post on using Evernote as a song writing workstation. Everyone knows what is Evernote, but not many songwriters may understand its utility as an app for songwriters: You can jot down song ideas, use the voice note feature to record melody ideas, share files with co-writers and sync your writings with your other computing devices using Evernote’s super cool syncing abilities.

In fact, in my android phone, the default voice recorder’s sharing feature allows me to upload my recordings to Evernote. This is a must-have for songwriters! Download link: http://goo.gl/1cYBj

An alternative app you might want to consider is Springpad, which also has similar features, but without a desktop program, so syncing is only between an android device and the web.

Recording – AL Voice Recorder
To quickly record those sudden melody ideas, a recording app is more or less indispensable. The default voice recorder should do for most users, but if you’re particular about recording your song ideas in higher quality, AL Voice Recorder is a decent option. This app supports recording in WAV format at chosen sample rates. Recordings can also be sent via SMS/Gmail. Download link: http://goo.gl/cJif1

An alternative app with similar features is Hertz, the WAV recorder.

Do you use any other Android app as a writer of songs for praise and worship?
