Many Christian songwriters take the Indie route, making and selling music on their own. If you think producing a well mixed & mastered record without the backing of a label is challenging, try distributing it online - you'll find out in no time that it's a very pricey exercise!
But not anymore. How would you like to get your music on all major online music stores for free?
I am talking Spotify, iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon-MP3, Napster, eMusic, Deezer, 7 Digital, LimeWire Store, TuneTribe, Juno, Beatport, Lala, Nokia Music Store, 24/7 entertainment, WiMP, CDON.COM, VidZone Digital Media, iMusica, DanceFuel, JamVana, DJMr, Hardstyle, Masterbeat, iMusica, Peoples Music Store, ICJ, Thumbplay, Virgin Mega, Jamba, Meteli.net, InProdicon, Prefueled, Klicktrack, The Peoples Music Awards, Play.com, Tradebit and Basepoint Media.
Your music can be published in all these stores legally for free and with zero paper work - it's a fully comfortable online exercise! This solution goes by the name of Record Union.
What you need:
1. The mastered tracks of your songs in Wave format (16 bit, 44.1kHz, 2-channel, PCM encoded ).
2. A free account with Record Union.
3. A fast Internet connection to upload your songs.
4. A PayPal account to receive payments when someone buys your music.
5. A UPC or "barcode" for your album. If you don’t already have one, you can purchase a UPC from Record Union for $10.
So head over to Record Union and open your free Account, click on submit content and go to "create a new release" and fill in the required information. Next, upload your tracks in the required format and the album cover art. On submission, a summary screen displays all the information for you to verify one last time, hit 'Publish' and that's it! Once published, you can't edit anything, so be careful to check everything well before publishing.
In about 4-6 weeks time after your submission, Record Union will convert your tracks into the format required by each online shop and make them available for sale in stores that sell the kind of music that you make.
How much can you make when you publish your music this way? Record Union asks for the first $5 annually from each single or album you upload only after it starts generating sales from the services it distributes to and 15% of the sales. This means you don't pay anything until your music begins to sell, so there are no financial risks for you as an artist. You end up receiving around 85% from track sales after the music shops have also taken their cut. Read the FAQ page for further details.
