Maybe you think ‘apple’ is a silly name for a tech brand. Maybe you don’t like Apple’s closed policies. Maybe you think Apple products are overpriced. Maybe you want a good camera (with flash) on your phone. Maybe you hate bloatware like iTunes. Whatever be the reason, let’s face it: not everyone has/wants an iPhone.
If you are a songwriter and you own a phone running Android, you should dig this post. As a songwriter, you know by now that moments of inspiration do not come at planned time periods…they just flash at any time. The mobile phone is probably the most useful device to capture that unexpected idea…lyric or melody or both at almost any time, night or day! Here are the most useful Android apps for a songwriter.
Let’s start with the text editor, in which you will type in your lyric ideas. G-Notepad is a user-friendly app with all the features you need. This app enables saving your text files to your Android phone's SD card for transferring to your computer later. Folders can be created from within the Save-As menu as you wish. The app also supports browsing through your phone’s folders and files in a easy-to-use manner.
Alternative: AK Notepad - This app also facilitates jotting down your lyric ideas and saving it on your phone. You can also send your note by SMS or email apart from customizing appearance of notes and also sort or search notes by title.

Another notepad alternative is GDocs Notepad. The advantage with this app is the ability to sync (two-way) with Google Docs. It works offline, provides a search function and supports multiple languages.
If you're on the move and want to develop your lyric ideas further, a rhyming dictionary can be most useful when you are stuck for rhymes for that cool word in your song. Just open Rhyme Finder, input the word, select 1/2/3 syllables and hit 'search' to get rhyming ideas.
If you are more into imperfect rhymes, then B-Rhymes Dictionary is for you:
This app helps you find near-rhymes for your lyrics. Download link on Android phone.
As a Christian songwriter, you would want a Bible for ready reference. Bible Reader 4 for Android provides easy search functions to find any verse you are looking for. Bibles are stored offline for use when you are not connected also. Direct download link for your Android device.
Apart from lyric ideas, songwriters need to capture melody ideas also at any time. This app is a free good quality voice recorder/player with live pitch play pack, reverse playback, adjustable recording preamplifier, 10-hours recording time, amplitude meter, loop playback, auto limiter to detect clipping and reduce amplification in real time and boost playback to power up silent tracks. To convert recorded files is a bit of a hassle though. You need to change the file extension to .raw, convert with a PC application and change codec sample rate to 22050. More detailed instructions are found in the FAQ section here.
An alternative app is Voice Recorder
This app records to your Android phone's SD card and facilitates sending the data as an attachment via Gmail. Provides search by 'title' and 'date.'
So go ahead, install these apps into your Android device and start writing your songs for the Lord!
